Giving Thanks

Still Giving Thanks

It is two days after Thanksgiving and I am still giving thanks. I gave thanks this morning when I hiked in Garden Of The Gods park at dawn. Thanks for the beauty of my surroundings, for each breath of fresh mountain air , for the wildlife, the red rocks, the dirt beneath my feet and and for the ability to hike and climb and have my healthy 82 year old body carry me so well.

I have so much to be thankful for that I felt almost guilty Thanksgiving Day thinking of how comparatively well off I am and how so many people all over the planet are not doing so well. No I am not wealthy but unlike so many people I eat nourishing food, I have a comfy home to be safe in, I am pretty healthy, and I enjoy the companionship of a bright, creative, loving wife.

I am so thankful and relieved that the US election is over and I feel a diminished sense of fear and dread that comes from dealing with divisiveness , violence and uncertainty. I am thankful that not only do not have the coronavirus but that I have the prerogative to avoid dangerous places and situations where I might be exposed. Although I am in a high risk category. I am not forced to be in or have to work in a risky environment to survive.

I am also so very grateful for the ability and the opportunity to create, to play and record music and to create photo art .And, I am thankful for hope. Hope for a new and better day. People ask me how I manage to do so much at my age. Or how do I face difficulty or failure and start over again. In fact, what keeps me going are two things – gratitude and optimism. I awaken each day thankful for another day and thrilled to meet the day’s opportunities and surprises.

If you have never tried it do try a practice of gratitude. No matter how difficult things are, spend a few minutes each day giving thanks for what you can find to be thankful for. It does not matter if they are big or little things, you will always find something. And in my experience, the more you find to be grateful for the more possibilities and goodness open themselves to you.

Be well,

Joseph Liberti

The Twilight Zone

I found a moment of beauty and magic in the twilight zone

Sometimes I like to walk slowly along the road near my home just before twilight. I relax breathe in the fading beauty of the day and the approaching night and become very peaceful. It is like a walking meditation. Sometimes I meet my neighbors and we say muffled hellos through our face masks and move on enjoying the moment. I see some beautifully xeriscaped yards and some wild brushy lots and sycamore, elm, oak and cottonwood trees. I gaze at everything with soft eyes and let myself be attracted to places where light and shadow and blossoms and foliage join to create magic scenes. Then suddenly I am in it. I am in a magic moment of twilight – the twilight zone. I follow the light and click the shutter. This photo was one of those times. Enjoy.

As dusk settles into the Garden Of The Gods, the last rays of the sun reveal a rainbow of fall foliage.

Dawn In The Garden Of The Gods

inspiration at dawn in the garden of the gods

Dawn lights up the familiar red rocks and pinnacles in the Garden Of The Gods park and once again sets my heart afire. I live near this beautiful scene and have taken many photos in many different weather conditions. I never know what to expect and I am always delighted. I am so grateful for the wonderful nature that surrounds us and for another day to explore, to create in and to enjoy. Have a wonderful day!

Belleza Espiritual

Sea Oats Belleza Espiritual

To brighten your day – a look into the spiritual beauty or belleza espiritual of Sea Oats on an October morning near the Garden Of The Gods. I pass these beautiful plants almost daily as I approach the trailhead into Garden Of The Gods park in Colorado Springs near my home. I watched and waited for the delicate blooms to appear so I could capture their beauty in a photo. One morning there was a freeze and almost instantly the oats turned brown and faded and I missed the opportunity to photograph them in their prime. In this photo art I present my experience of their eternal beauty, grace and spirit.

kintzley’s ghost

kintzley’s ghost was red kintzsley’s dream

Kintzley’s Ghost is a type of honeysuckle propagated by William “Red” Kintzley at Iowa State University greenhouses in the 1880’s. It was passed along to family members and was recently rediscovered growing in Colorado. When I first saw this plant at the demonstration garden in Colorado Springs I fell in love with it and didn’t not know its name and could never quite get a good photograph if it. Recently i discovered it in a neighbors’s yard near Garden Of The Gods park and she told me the story. In this piece I interpreted it by presented its ghostly side.

Rest Stop

A rest stop in Garden Of The Gods

This is a cozy spot in Garden Of The Gods Colorado to stop, take a breath and rest in the warm glow of the morning sun. I am so fortunate to be able to hike the Garden every morning. There is always something beautiful to see or wildlife to watch. Less than a mile from this spot you can take one trail with a fabulous view of Pikes’s Peak or another to see awesome red rock formations that look like castles.

Lasting Beauty

Day 3 of A Ten Day Art Challenge – Lasting Beauty

Sculptor Timothy Nimmo chose me to complete a 10 day art challenge on Facebook beginning Monday July 13 . The purpose of the challenge is to fill Facebook with art and to acknowledge artists.. I admire Tim and love his magnificent art. I am honored and humbled to be included..

My Day 3 post in the 10 Day Art Challenge is Lasting Beauty, a recently completed piece. I love the dry leaves I find still clinging to trees months after the change of seasons and which are still doing their part in making our world more beautiful. I love their graceful curves and subtle colors but beyond that I honor and revere the beauty within. This curvy cluster was on a fallen branch of cottonwood I found in Garden Of The Gods. For a while I stood and connected with their spirit. Their portrait is not simply dead dry leaves in the light of dawn but a visual poem to their eternal energy.
